Marco Rossi delivers winner as Wild grab huge OT victory over Stars

Marco Rossi buried a Mats Zuccarello feed less than a minute into overtime, delivering a much-needed 3-2 victory for the Wild over the Dallas Stars at Xcel Energy Center on Sunday afternoon.

Jason Robertson was called for tripping just 13 seconds into the extra period, and the Wild took full advantage of his mistake. With a 4-on-3 advantage, some slick passing from Matt Boldy and Zuccarello led to Rossi scoring the third OT winner of his young career.

This was a huge win for the Wild, who are now six points ahead of the Calgary Flames for the final wild card spot in the Western Conference (though the Flames have two games in hand). With the win, MoneyPuck.com now estimates their odds of making the playoffs to be at 91.8 percent.

This victory also snapped a four-game losing streak for Minnesota, who had lost six of its last seven contests. With a loss on Sunday, things might've gotten dicey in the playoff picture. But after two overtime losses during last week's road trip, the Wild secured both possible points against a Stars team with the third-best record in the NHL.

Dallas held a 1-0 lead through two periods, but things heated up in the third session. Just over three minutes into the period, Boldy located a Jared Spurgeon rebound and fired the puck past Jake Oettinger from his knees to tie the game. Less than two minutes later, Marcus Foligno drove the net and scored on assists from Rossi and Boldy, who had a three-point game.

But the Wild's 2-1 lead didn't last, as Stars defenseman Thomas Harley tied it up on a shot from the point with around seven minutes left in regulation.

The Stars got off to a strong start, opening the scoring early in the first period on a Robertson goal that Filip Gustavsson arguably should've saved. That would be the only tally by either team in the first 40 minutes of action.

The Wild played like a team that knew the importance of this game. Their struggling offense recorded 41 shots on goal, marking the first time they've recorded at least 40 SOG since late November. Impressively, they found a way to come from behind and beat a Stars team that came into the game 35-2-1 when leading after two periods.

Minnesota's next game is against the lowly San Jose Sharks on Wednesday night in St. Paul. Superstar Kirill Kaprizov could potentially make his long-awaited return from injury in that contest. After that, the Wild will travel to Calgary for a huge showdown with the Flames on Friday.
