New York Rangers forward Matt Rempe has been handed an eight-game suspension following an incident in which he boarded and elbowed Dallas Stars defenseman Miro Heiskanen. The suspension, announced by the NHL, underscores the league’s commitment to player safety and its efforts to eliminate dangerous hits from the game.

The hit, which occurred during a recent matchup between the Rangers and Stars, saw Rempe deliver a dangerous blow from behind to Heiskanen, a key player for the Stars. The severity of the hit and the potential for injury led to the NHL’s DoPS coming down fairly hard on Rempe. It mattered too that the player has a history of fines, ejections, and suspensions.
The league has inconsistently imposed penalties on dangerous plays to ensure the safety of its athletes, but Rempe’s suspension might serve as a reminder of the consequences of reckless behavior on the ice. He’s known as a player who can’t successfully walk the line between physical play and hurting others with illegal hits. Frankly, he’s quickly playing himself out of the NHL.
While the NHL continues to face scrutiny for its handling of suspensions, especially in terms of consistency with repeat offenders versus first-time offenders, the league’s action, in this case, is a clear statement to a player that has a history of going overboard.
