It was an eventful morning for the Toronto Maple Leafs, prior to their matchup against the New Jersey Devils.

Jake McCabe will return to the lineup after a four-game absence. McCabe suffered an upper-body injury during a fight on January 5 against Philadelphia Flyers forward Garnet Hathaway. The 31-year-old shook off any notion of rust, stating that it’s only been a week and a half since being out of the lineup.

John Tavares was placed on injured reserve and is listed as week-to-week with an upper-body injury. Fraser Minten was called up from the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, but will not suit up Thursday.

“It’s unfortunate, in practice, you know. It’s bad luck. It is what it is, we’ve got to move on from it right now,” Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube said of Tavares’ injury.

Max Pacioretty and Pontus Holmberg will slot into the lineup, but Minten won’t suit up Thursday. Max Domi will move into the No. 2 centre role, with Pacioretty and William Nylander as his probable linemates.

“He hasn’t practiced with us,” Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube said of Minten. “It’s not so much of an emergency, we have players who have been with us in practice and played. I thought about it for a while, but I went with, what I went with.”

Anthony Stolarz took part in individual work before the optional morning skate began. Stolarz has been out of the lineup since suffering an injury on December 12 against the Anaheim Ducks and underwent a procedure to remove a loose body in his knee. This was Stolarz’s first on-ice appearance since the injury and while no further update on his status has been provided, it’s a sign that he’s progressing in the right direction and in line to re-join the team at the end of January.
