Meet the Newest New Jersey Devil: Remi Poirier

By the next season, Poirier was playing full-time in the AHL. He played 38 games in 2023-24 and earned a record of 17-16-4. His record improved by the 2024-25 season, with a 17-11-1 record in 31 games.

After two strong full-time AHL seasons, it was clear that Poirier was ready to be the starting goaltender in Texas. He played in 52 games for the Stars in 2025-26. Poirier continued to improve, with a 27-19-6 record to end 2025-26.

Poirier Can Get His First NHL Experience in New Jersey

Poirier has spent the last four seasons with the Stars organization; however, he has yet to play on NHL ice. Even though Poirier probably anticipated his first NHL game being played in green and white, he can have the opportunity to make his NHL debut in Devils red and black.

Since Poirier was claimed off of waivers by the Devils, he is currently on the NHL team’s roster. To send him down to Utica, the Devils will have to place him back on waivers. However, the team just placed goaltender David Rittich on waivers for the purpose of reassignment the same day they picked up Poirier. The Devils signed Rittich during the offseason to a one-year contract, in the hopes of carrying three goaltenders on their roster.

With Rittich being sent down to the AHL, it is clear that the Devils are planning to play with Jake Allen and Nico Daws as the primary goaltending tandem. With the addition of Poirier now, the Devils can still stick to their original plan of carrying three goaltenders.

Since the Devils picked up Poirier off waivers, the front office clearly sees something they like. They see the skill and depth he brought to the Stars in the AHL, and now he has the chance to bring that to the Devils organization. With just a few days to go until the start of the regular season, there’s a good chance Poirier remains on the Devils and becomes the team’s third goaltender. 

In the event that Poirier gets sent down to the Comets, there is a strong chance he will not remain there for the entirety of the season. The Devils will need someone with his goaltending skill during the season. He has an exceptional eye when it comes to goaltending; it makes sense for Poirier to get his first NHL game under his belt in 2026-27. The Devils were quick to snatch him up, and New Jersey will be able to give him this incredible milestone this season.

Regular Season Begins This Week

The NHL regular season opens on Tuesday, Sept. 29, but the Devils don’t play their first game until Thursday, Oct. 1. The Devils will begin their 2026-27 season at home and host the Philadelphia Flyers at 7 PM ET. With all the new additions to the Devils team, this season is shaping up to put them in a good place to contend.
