The eyes of the hockey world have been affixed on Mitch Marner ever since he signed a lucrative deal to join the Vegas Golden Knights and leave his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs behind.
After years of disappointing performances in the playoffs, Marner is looking to change the narrative around his career by joining the 2023 Stanley Cup champions and helping them reclaim their status as the NHL’s top dog from the two-time reigning champion Florida Panthers.
While it’s still early, things are off to a great start. Marner has racked up eight points in six games as the Golden Knights have gone 4-0-2, making them one of just four teams in the league yet to suffer a regulation loss.
On Monday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, host Tyler Yaremchuk and co-host and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton discussed Marner’s hot start and what his addition means to the team’s outlook in the postseason.
Carter Hutton: I went with Mitch Marner. Vegas game, huge game for Mitch. Finally gets on the scoreboard. He scores early, Barbashev on a great forecheck feeds Mitch on the slot, makes a great play and roofs it, and then his other goal was an absolute world class one. He’s coming through the neutral zone with speed, he kicks it out, he gets it back and just foils everybody. I think the hype around Marner’s been so good. He’s got eight points in six games… and it’s been unbelievable, that line. This depth of Vegas, where they’re at… this is a dangerous hockey team.
Tyler Yaremchuk: And listen, like this Vegas team will be defined on how far they make it in the playoffs, and to make it deep in the West, as we’ve seen the last two years, you’ve got to roll through the Edmonton Oilers at one point and go toe-to-toe with their star power up front. There are not a lot of teams in the league who can match a McDavid and Draisaitl one-two punch, but what this Marner addition does for Vegas, it puts them right on that level.
