It was a milestone afternoon for a couple of Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday in their 6-5 overtime win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Along with Auston Matthews reaching the 700-point plateau and topping Darryl Sittler for second all-time on the franchise’s goals list, Mitch Marner passed George Armstrong on the franchise’s all-time points list with his second period assist on Matthews’ goal.
The assists was Marner’s 57th of the season and 502nd of his career. It also marked the 714th point of his NHL career in just his 635th career game pushing him past Armstrong and into sole possession of fifth on the Maple Leafs’ all-time points list. He is currently the active leader in franchise points with Matthews sitting just 14 points back of him on that list. His 502nd assist also puts him just 26 away from passing Sittler for third on the franchise list in that category.
As for points, Marner’s next target on the franchise list is Börje Salming (768) who he sits just 54 points back from tying. On top of that, Marner is just nine points away from entering the top-250 in points in NHL history, which he will surely reach before the end of the 2024-25 season.
Going back to the 2015 NHL Draft when the Maple Leafs selected Marner fourth overall, he has the second-highest point total behind only Connor McDavid (1,057 in 699 games played). Some may have considered him undersized at the time of his draft, but he’s gone on to become one of the best playmakers in the league.
As for where he’ll finish his career on the Maple Leafs’ all-time lists, that’s depend on what Marner and Brad Treliving can work out this offseason. After all, Marner is heading down the road to free agency this summer and the only thing that will keep him climbing those lists is an new, extended contract to continue to wear the blue and white.
