One of the biggest holes on the Montreal Canadiens' lineup is at the 2nd center position, and the organization made it clear that they were ready to go all in to acquire a big target this summer during their end-of-season press conference.
Indeed, general manager Kent Hughes stated that while he remained status quo at the trade deadline, it won't be like that this offseason. The team will have significant holes to fill on the lineup due to players leaving in free agency or retiring, and while some of them will be occupied by younger prospects, management is expected to make additions over the summer.
In free agency, a few great players will be available, and it appears the organization is already active, showing interest in veteran centerman Claude Giroux.
A new report confirmed that the Habs would be willing to sign Giroux in free agency for the second-center role.
However, Giroux also stated that he would be interested in staying with the Ottawa Senators, meaning the Habs will have to pull out all the stops if they truly want him.
Even if the Canadiens were eliminated by the Washington Capitals in five games, the team made it to the playoffs, showing that they've reached another step in their rebuild.
With Lane Hutson almost sure of winning the Calder Trophy this year, and Ivan Demidov likely to be in the race for it next season, the Canadiens will be a team to watch closely this summer.
Montreal is emerging as a very enticing destination for players. Head coach and NHL legend Marty St-Louis has proven himself, the fanbase isn't as problematic as it used to be, and they are on the verge of becoming one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference.
Giroux, 37, scored 50 points, including 15 goals last season, and added five points in six playoff games with the Senators.
