The Montreal Canadiens announced late Wednesday morning that they had recalled rookie defenseman David Reinbacher from their AHL affiliate, the Laval Rocket.
The recall comes a day after the team announced that veteran defenseman Mike Matheson was day-to-day with a lower-body injury. Matheson, 32, did not dress for the team’s 4-3 shootout victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night and will not be in the lineup when the Canadiens play Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals in Washington DC on Wednesday night (7:30 pm ET). That left the Montreal Canadiens with only six defenseman on their roster for Tuesday night’s game but they will now have seven with Reinbacher joining them in Washington DC.

In the eyes of many, David Reinbacher played well enough in the shortened training camp and preseason to make the Canadiens roster but due to basically a numbers game and salary cap implications, the team decided it would be better for the fifth overall pick from the 2023 NHL Entry Draft to get more playing time down in the AHL with the Rocket. Through four games with Laval this season, Reinbacher has racked up two assists. He’s a plus 3 with 14 penalty minutes. David Reinbacher, 21, has nine goals and 25 assists in 82 games for the Laval Rocket. The 6-foot-3, 207-pound rearguard played his first two NHL games with the Canadiens last season and registered one assist.
Montreal Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis was scheduled to address the media at Noon ET on Wednesday and was expected to provide any pertinent roster news ahead of the team’s game against the Capitals.
Forwards Florian Xhekaj and Oliver Kapanen also missed the shootout win over the Sabres, with the latter not having played a game yet this season. Goalie Samuel Montembeault remains on injured reserve and there have been no updates on when he will start practicing again.
