Montreal Canadiens Will Be Without Speedy Forward

The Montreal Canadiens have indicated that they will be without their speedy forward for a while. The news was expected after seeing the collision that caused the injury. On Thursday evening, Alex Newhook left the game with what looked like a lower-body, specifically an ankle injury. On the play, Dallas Star defenceman Ilya Lyubushkin was assessed a two-minute hooking penalty. Newhook then went off with no weight on the leg with the help of teammates.

Montreal Canadien Alex Newhook Injury News

The discussion from the postgame definitely suggests that Newhook will miss some time. Even though an exact timetable is unknown, we will be sure to update you once the details become available.

Individually, this is disappointing for Newhook. On a Montreal team currently tied for the Atlantic Division lead, Newhook is trying to show he can be a top-six contributor. With 12 points through 17 games, he is fifth right now on team scoring. One reason that is impressive is that he has spent very limited time on the power play. In contrast, he had been one of the Habs more important penalty killers. It’s not easy to why he will be missed in the lineup. Newhook hopes for a speedy recovery, so he can pick up right where he left off.

In the meantime, this will cause for more line shuffling in Montreal. They were already known to be in the market for a second-line centre. Even though Newhook has been playing the wing, the need for a top-six guy is only amplified with this injury. Now, it is possible that could come from within. For instance, Oliver Kapanen had done well in forming the link with Newhook and budding star Ivan Demidov. It seems it will be someone else’s chance now to play with Demidov. The other good thing for the Habs is that other lines have been figuring themselves out recently. But that makes it harder to pull someway away and try to replace Newhook. Not to mention his work on the PK. In any case, Montreal will need a fit with Demidov. If a trial internally doesn’t work, look for them to go fish, on the open seas of the trade market.
