The Michigan Wolverines traveled to Columbus, OH to face the Buckeyes for two games this weekend. The first game was on Friday night at 6:30 PM EST. Saturday’s game was at 5:00 PM EST.

Friday’s Game

First Period

Michigan wasted no time jumping out to a 1-0 lead as Will Horcoff (Pittsburgh Penguins) scored his 20th of the year. Michigan had the first power play of the game but Ohio State killed it off. Before the first game came to an end, the Buckeyes tied it as Davis Burnside scored his ninth of the year.

Second Period

Michigan in the second took the lead back as Adam Valentini scored 25 seconds in to make it 2-1. It was his seventh of the season. Just under 2.5 minutes into the period Ohio State tied it back up as Max Montes scored on the power play to make it 2-2. It was Montes’ tenth of the year. The Buckeyes took the lead 7:20 into the period as James Hong scored his third of the year. The Buckeyes’ lead was short-lived as Asher Barnett (Edmonton Oilers) tied it just over nine minutes into the period. It was his second of the year. Ohio State took the lead back when Jake Karabela (Washington Capitals) scored his sixth of the year. Michigan knotted it up with 42.7 seconds left as Jayden Perron (Carolina Hurricanes) scored his tenth of the year. It was 4-4 after 40.

Third Period

In the final period, it was all Wolverines as T.J. Hughes scored to make it 5-4 and then Hughes again to secure the win 6-4. Both Hughes goals came via the power play. The two goals were his 12th and 13th of the year. Stephen Peck got the start in net for Michigan while Sam Hillebrandt got the start for Ohio State. Peck stopped 30 of the 34 shots he faced improving to 4-0-0 with a 2.74 goals against average and a .901 save percentage. Hillebrandt stopped 18 of the 24 shots he faced falling to 2-4-0 with a 3.80 goals-against average and an .882 save percentage. 

Saturday’s Game

First Half

The two teams were at it again on Saturday. A back-and-forth first period but Michigan struck first with 2:17 left in the period as Nick Moldenhauser (Toronto Maple Leafs) scored a shorthanded goal to give Michigan a 1-0 lead. Moldenhauser scored his sixth of the season. Neither team found the back of the net in the middle period.

Second Half

In the third period, Michigan looked to complete the sweep and at 10:30 into the period Valentini scored for the second game in a row to make it 2-0. Ohio Stats got one back with 5:44 left as Felix Caron scored on the power play. It was his eighth of the season. Ohio State would tie it with 3:15 left as Nathan McBrayer scored his fourth of the season.

In overtime, just 2:50 in Moldenhauser scored the game-winner to give the Wolverines the weekend sweep. Peck got the start again stopping 32 of the 34 shots he faced. Hillebrandt got the start for Ohio State stopping 21 of the 24 shots he faced. 

Michigan Next Up

Michigan will face Michigan State next season with Friday’s game at home and then Saturday’s game will be at Little Caesars Arena.
