Need a little puck luck? We got you

We will get to MLB below, but we're a bit excited today for the first big regular-season slate in the NHL. Six games tonight, and betting value abounds on the ice.

Parlaying two teams to win in regulation

Big year coming for the Canes — Carolina is one of the favorites to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals thanks to a strong returning core that succeeds on all three levels. The Hurricanes' forwards of Sebastian Aho, Andrei Svechnikov, Teuvo Teravainen, and Seth Jarvis bring the offensive juice, and Brent Burns joins the team, as well as  Jaccob Slavin, to form a menacing top defensemen duo. Frederik Andersen was one of the league's top goalies a season ago. This team is truly built to win everywhere on the ice.

Carolina will draw Columbus tonight, and while the addition of Johnny Gaudreau makes the Blue Jackets an exciting team, there are holes here for the visitors. The defensemen aren't the strongest group, and the news was just announced that starting goalie Elvis Merzlikins is out tonight due to illness. That leaves the Blue Jackets with the inexperienced Daniil Tarasov between the pipes. Carolina is the play tonight.

Banner ceremony tonight for Colorado — There will be some extra buzz in the Colorado air tonight, as the 2022 Stanley Cup champs will be raising their banner against the lowly Chicago Blackhawks. The Avalanche were absolutely dominant last season, and all signs point to another elite season. Meanwhile, the Blackhawks have shipped out some of their best young players as they begin a complete rebuild. This game should not be competitive in the slightest; Chicago was one of the most generous teams to shots and goals last season. It's hard to envision a world where the Avalanche lose to the Blackhawks tonight.

The play: Carolina and Colorado to win in regulation (+118 DK)

Goal scorer parlay for our night

When looking back on last season's numbers, there are three teams that seem to be in great spots to net some goals. The first two are the above teams on our radar in Carolina and Colorado, and the third is Toronto. The Maple Leafs averaged the second-most goals per game a year ago, while Montreal allowed the most goals against them, so it's an ideal overlap to begin the season.

We have three guys here in a goal parlay for a bit of fun, we got this trio at +1463 on FanDuel.

Andrei Svechnikov — Svechnikov averaged five shots on goal per game in four meetings against Columbus last season, scoring once. Last year, Svechnikov came out the gates rolling, netting two goals in the season opener and scoring once in six of Carolina's first seven games. He was second on the team in goals scored with 30.

Mitchell Marner — Marner really liked shooting the puck against Montreal last season, putting up 4+ SOG in all four games against the Canadiens. Marner remains on the top line with Auston Matthews and Michael Bunting, and that existing chemistry should go a long way tonight.

Nathan MacKinnon — We go chalky for our final leg, but MacKinnon is in a great spot to find the back of the net at home in what should be an electric atmosphere for Colorado. MacKinnon had 32 goals in just 65 games and will be getting the puck on net tonight.

It's great to have hockey back! Enjoy your night.

In the news ...

ALDS: Yordan Alvarez walks it off in Houston; Yankees win — The biggest moment yet in the MLB postseason came in Houston courtesy of a walk-off three-run homer from Yordan Alvarez. Seattle held a 7-3 lead heading into the eighth inning, so the 8-7 loss is particularly demoralizing for the Mariners. Meanwhile, Gerrit Cole struck out eight and held the Guardians to just one run in 6.1 innings pitched. New York won 4-1. Both series will be off today before returning tomorrow.

NLDS Game 2s tonight — The Phillies took Game 1 in Atlanta and are now -165 favorites to win the best-of-five series. It will be Zack Wheeler vs. Kyle Wright in this NL East battle. Both pitchers averaged two runs allowed per game in their three starts against these teams this season. The Dodgers, the World Series betting favorites, beat the Padres 5-3 in Game 1 and have moved to -425 to win the series. We have a tremendous pitching duel with Yu Darvish for San Diego and Clayton Kershaw for Los Angeles. When Darvish last saw the Dodgers in September, he pitched seven innings, allowing just two hits and no runs. Kershaw has allowed just one run in two starts against San Diego. To us, it looks like some low-scoring games are in store today.

NFL to discuss roughing the passer rules — Much was made this past week about the state of roughing the passer calls in the NFL. First, it was an extremely questionable call on Atlanta when sacking Tom Brady, and then it was what we feel comfortable deeming one of the worst calls we've ever seen against the Chiefs and Chris Jones on "Monday Night Football." The Chiefs were able to win despite what was a massive swing in the game; the same cannot be said for the Falcons. The NFL is considering adding a review process for these calls to make sure the refs get it right.
