New Details Revealed Around Max Domi’s Surgery Complications

News of a Max Domi injury last week came as a surprise to most around the hockey world, especially given that it was described as complications from offseason surgery.

Exact details haven’t come out about what exactly went wrong during the procedure, however reporter Steve Simmons recently wrote an article where he revealed everything he’s heard about the rather scary situation.

Simmons wrote:

“According to sources, Domi chose his own surgeon to do the operation rather than the one the Maple Leafs had in mind. That’s not uncommon with today’s modern athlete, and that doesn’t affect his insurance status as a Leafs player.

What is uncommon: Something went terribly wrong with the surgery. For public consumption, no one is saying what. Almost every operation on a professional athlete is followed by a press release that indicates that successful surgery has taken place.

Whatever happened here wasn’t deemed successful. Apparently, Domi could not walk in the days following surgery, which created significant alarm. His status remains in doubt for the coming season,”

The 31-year-old Domi registered 36 points (12 goals, 24 assists) in 80 games played last season. He has two years remaining on the four-year, $15 million extension he signed with the Maple Leafs in 2024, which includes a 13-team no-trade list.

Domi was clearly able to battle through the issue all of last season before undergoing offseason surgery to address it. Rarely, if ever, do you hear about these procedures on professional athletes going wrong, however.

Throughout his tenure in Toronto, Domi has been extremely durable, having played in 234 of 246 possible regular-season games across three years.

If there’s any silver lining, the veteran forward still has four months to recover and possibly rehab before the 2026-27 campaign starts in October.
