Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports

The New Jersey Devils Traded forward Tyler Toffoli to the Winnipeg Jets. Details are coming in, and the pick is believed to be a second-round pick in 2025 and a third-round pick in 2024. In addition, the Devils will retain 50 percent of Toffoli’s salary.

The New Jersey Devils acquired Tyler Toffoli from the Calgary Flames right before the 2023 NHL Draft in exchange for Yegor Sharangovich. Devils President and General Manager Tom Fitzgerald stated, “He was not shopping Toffoli, but was listening to calls on him.”

After dismissing Lindy Ruff as head coach, Fitzgerald admitted that teams have been calling on Toffoli, but he would not give his leading scorer away for free.

However, with the way the market was set with Jake Guentzel going to Carolina. The rumored asking price was a first-round pick and prospect. That was not there. However, these assets, Fitzgerald can use later in the summer to acquire a piece that has been a priority for the Devils since the offseason.

Fitzgerald wanted to get a contract extension done with Toffoli. Toffoli wanted to play in New Jersey. Toffoli stated he finally had offensive players he could play with at the beginning of the season. However, there was a difference in terms and dollar amount. Not to mention what the contract would look like towards the end with trade or no-trade protection.

This season with the Devils, Toffoli has 26 goals. Eight of his 26 goals have been on the power play. In 66 games, he has 44 points (of course, 26 goals and 18 assists).

The Devils held him out of Thursday’s game against the St. Louis Blues, citing precautionary/trade-related reasons. This is not the first time Toffoli has been traded at the deadline. When he was with the Los Angeles Kings, the Kings traded him to the Vancouver Canucks. Then, after he signed with the Montreal Canadiens, the Canadiens traded him to the Calgary Flames before coming to the Devils.

Toffoli is a playoff performer who helped the Kings win the Stanley Cup in 2014. In 88 Stanley Cup Playoff games, he has 44 points (18 goals and 26 assists). For his career, Toffoli has recorded 510 points (253 goals and 257 assists) in 794 career NHL regular seasons.
