New Report From Jeff Marek Fuels Talk of Edmonton Oilers Goaltending Shakeup

The Edmonton Oilers have long been rumoured for a shake-up in net, and now NHL Insider Jeff Marek has all but confirmed that news in his latest report.

After falling short in the Stanley Cup Finals for a second straight season, the Edmonton Oilers came into the off-season looking to make some big changes under GM Stan Bowman, and they've done just that.

Unfortunately for some Oilers fans, the changes have been exclusive to the forward group, with no changes on defense or in net, and heading into the 2025/26 season, that may spell disaster for this team.

Jeff Marek hints at goaltending changes coming

While the duo of Calvin Pickard and Stuart Skinner are solid, they simply aren't at the level needed for this Oilers team to get over the final hurdle in their chase for Stanley Cup glory, with many hoping that they will make some type of change.

Now, on the latest episode of The Sheet, NHL Insider Jeff Marek lists two names that could be brought in to challenge for the backup role as the Oilers potentially look for a shakeup heading into training camp.

There are two that I wonder about; I do wonder about Michael DiPietro; I do wonder about Nico Daws; and it becomes a different situation with a different backup to Stuart Skinner.

Unfortunately for the Oilers, there just aren't many elite goaltenders available on the trade market or in free agency, and with the team lineup all but set for the upcoming regular season, if a change does come, it's going to be small.

Only time will tell whether or not DiPietro or Daws would be interested in competing for the backup job in Edmonton, but with the team needing to try something, a little healthy competition in training camp for the backup role would be good for this team.
