New York Rangers announce 2021 Development Camp roster; here’s a deeper look

The New York Rangers have released the roster for the 2021 Development Camp.

Nils Lundkvist (2018 1st Rd), Braden Schneider (2020 1st Rd) and Brennan Otthman (2021 1st Rd) headline this group of prospects.

Below is the full list of players which includes 16 forwards, 8 defenseman, and 3 goalies.

Preview of Development Camp

Steve Kournianos of The Draft Analyst provided Forever Blueshirts with some insights into the Rangers selections that will be showcasing their talents.

Skilled forwards Ryder Korczak, (Rd 3) and Brody Lamb (Rd 4) don’t fit into your typical “physical forward” category, as they are offense-minded weapons who just happen to play hard,” he said.

As far as 3rd pick Jayden Grubbe goes, he believes that the center could be a steal for the Blueshirts. “He and Brennan Othmann were linmates for Canada-Black at the 2019 World under-17 Challenge and they blitzed opposing defensemen during breakouts left and right, but then made plays off turnovers,” Kournianos noted.

In goal, 4th round pick, Talyn Boyko played in the WHL last season and notched a 7-7-0 record with a .901 SV% and GAA of 3.02 with a shutout. Boyko is enormous at 6-7 and if his skills develop to go with his size, a bright future is ahead.

Key rookies to watch

Nils Lundkvist, the 21 year-old defenseman had an amazing SHL career and is ready to make the transition to the NHL.

This past season, Lundkvist was recognized as the Salming Trophy winner as the SHL’s best Swedish born defenseman. In 52 games, he notched 32 points which included 14 goals. That the most goals from a defenseman as a 21 year-old player or younger in the league’s history.

At 6-2 and 210 pounds, Braden Schneider plays a physical brand of hockey. He was highly regarded by Jeff Gorton who admitted he tried to trade up several times to draft him and was ultimately successful. After making a deal with the Calgary Flames, the Blueshirts chose him 19th overall in 2020.

The 19 year-old had an amazing 2021 as he won Gold with Team Canada at the World Championships with head coach Gerard Gallant. He was also the WHL’s top defender after scoring 27 points in 22 games.

The New York Rangers signed Will Cuylle to an entry-level contract that begins this season. They drafted Cuylle in the second round of the 2020 draft 60th overall. The pick was acquired from the L.A. Kings in exchange for Lias Andersson.

Last season, the 19 year-old played in 13 games with the Hartford Wolf Pack in the AHL. He registered 2 goals and 3 assists for 5 points in those contests.
