New York Rangers Extend Depth Forward

The New York Rangers have kicked off the true NHL offseason by making a tiny, or maybe not so tiny, splash in the pool, the day following the presentation of the 2025 Stanley Cup to the champion Florida Panthers. The reason we say not so tiny, is from who they signed. Today the Rangers announced that 6’8″ resident tough guy, Matt Rempe, signs a contract extension with the club. The deal is for two years and worth just under $1M per season.

The New York Rangers have extended Matt Rempe for two years, the team announced.

Matt Rempe of the Rangers Signs Two-Year Extension

Rempe has only played for the Rangers over his two-year NHL career. The 22-year-old netted three goals and five assists for eight points in 42 games this season. He also supplied 67 penalty minutes for the Blueshirts. Rempe had a Corsi for of 43.3 and a relative Corsi of -6.2. He split time between the NHL and the AHL Hartford Wolfpack.

The Calgary native has four goals and six assists for 10 points in 59 career games. New York originally drafted him in the sixth round, 165th overall of the 2020 NHL Draft. Rempe also played major junior for the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League.

What It Means

The young depth forward was set to be a restricted free agent on July 1. However, Rangers General Manager Chris Drury has decided to bring back the rugged forward.

Rempe has endeared himself to the Rangers’ faithful with his physical play and willingness to drop the gloves. However, he’s struggled at time  to stay out of making some questionable hits. He’s already been suspended twice by the league.

His struggles to stay out of the box had him left out of the lineup by former bench boss Peter Laviolette. However, Mike Sullivan is now and charge and he could find a place for Rempe. We’ll have to see how the off-season shakes out before projecting where Rempe will fit into the lineup.
