NHL analyst Evan Waldner of 'Jets Nation' revealed that prospect Nikita Chibrikov could surprise a lot of fans and coaches, crack the lineup, and make some noise.
Jets prospect Nikita Chibrikov may be very close to getting a permanent spot within the Winnipeg Jets NHL side of things, per NHL analyst Evan Waldner of 'Jets Nation.'
The 22-year-old winger has been spending years with the Manitoba Moose in the AHL, putting up 47 points in 70 games in 2023-24.
Last season, in 2024-25, although abbreviated by an injury, Nikita Chibrikov still managed to collect 20 points in 30 AHL games and scored three points (2G, 1A) in four games in the NHL, truly demonstrating that he can turn it around when given an opportunity.
Chibrikov, a 50th-overall selection in 2021, has a lot of offensive ability, saucy hands, a decent wrister, and plays a gritty way.
He's only 5-foot-10, however, and will need to refine himself defensively prior to becoming an everyday player, especially due to his smaller size.
'Despite standing just five-foot-ten, Chibrikov is an offensively-minded winger with excellent skating ability. He's relentless in the offensive zone, has slick hands, and owns a strong shot. But if he wants to become a more complete player, his defensive game will need to improve. The offensive potential is clearly there, and the best way for him to take the next step is by playing more NHL minutes. With open spots on the Jets' third line, there's no reason that opportunity shouldn't come soon.'- Evan Waldner
With Mason Appleton's absence, there's an open third-line right wing spot, which could be open to Chibrikov, who appears to be the leading candidate to own it, especially if he impresses early on in training camp.
He can also be responsible for secondary power-play unit duties, bringing skill and net-front presence.
Fans and coaches will have to take Chibrikov seriously this fall. He has tremendous offensive potential, and consistent NHL minutes could be what unlocks it, so maybe all he needs is someone to take a chance on him.
