The NHL handed down punishment on Tuesday morning following an incident involving Anaheim Ducks forward Beckett Sennecke during the game against the Montreal Canadiens played on Mar. 15.
Sennecke, the league’s top-performing rookie this season with 54 points in 70 games, was fined after a third-period play with the game tied at 3-3.
The rookie's behavior on said play drew attention from officials on the ice and prompted the league’s Hockey Operations department to punish him for embellishment.
The NHL confirmed the ruling in an official release in which the league outlined the penalty and the reasoning behind fining the Ducks player.
“Anaheim Ducks forward Beckett Sennecke has been fined $2,000 as supplementary discipline under NHL Rule 64 (Diving/Embellishment), the National Hockey League announced today,” the statement said. “NHL Rule 64 is designed to bring attention to and more seriously penalize players (and teams) who repeatedly dive and embellish in an attempt to draw penalties.”
The incident involved Sennecke falling after soft contact from Canadiens forward Josh Anderson, who was assessed a holding penalty on the play. Sennecke, meanwhile, received an embellishment minor.
As explained in the statement, the NHL's fine stems from the league's tracking system, which focuses on identifying repeated instances of diving or embellishment beyond what is called during games.

“Sennecke was issued a Warning following an incident flagged by NHL Hockey Operations during NHL Game No. 1006 vs. St. Louis on March 8,” the statement said. “His second Citation, which triggered the $2,000 fine, was issued for an incident at 4:34 of the third period during NHL Game No. 1059 at Montreal on March 15.”
The 20-year-old Sennecke enters the final stretch of the season leading all rookies in points, including 21 goals and 33 assists.
Anaheim, meanwhile, sits atop the Pacific Division with 82 points and is pushing toward its first playoff appearance since 2018. The Ducks will next face the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday, puck drop set for 10 p.m. ET.
