IN today’s NHL injury news update, the status of Chris Tanev in Toronto remains unclear and the team might have lost another key player in John Tavares. Meanwhile, Jason Dickinson was unable to play on Thursday vs the Utah Mammoth, but the coach said it wasn’t an ankle injury, which everyone assumed it was. Finally, there is a list of approximately a dozen other issues facing several NHL teams.
The Maple Leafs will be without veteran defenseman Chris Tanev for the foreseeable future. Toronto placed Tanev on injured reserve, retroactive to October 10, after he left Saturday’s win over the Colorado Avalanche with an upper-body injury following a collision with Artturi Lehkonen.
Jim Hiller has yet to offer a firm timeline, but reports are that he is now week to week. The team is “doing some further testing” to determine whether this could be longer-term.
The injury adds to a rough run of health issues for the 36-year-old, who played just 11 games last season. Through six games this season.
John Tavares headed down the tunnel after an awkward collision on Thursday night. Maple Leafs head coach Jim Hiller did not provide an update on the status of Tavares after the game, but he might miss some time. As of now, he is considered day-to-day.
Edmonton’s injury situation up front is problematic. Jason Dickinson made his long-awaited season debut on October 7 after battling a foot injury that lingered from late last season and resurfaced during training camp. Then on Thursday, he hurt himself at practice and was unable to play in that night’s game against Utah.
Interestingly, Babcock was asked about whether he was growing concerned about long-term issues with Dickinson’s ankle, and noted that it wasn’t his ankle that got hurt Thursday. While it might be good news that it’s not a recurring issue, it’s concerning that a new injury might have popped up.
