NHL Insider reveals massive update on Jason Robertson

The Dallas Stars enter the 2025-26 season with one of the most dangerous rosters in the NHL, but all eyes are on a single player: Jason Robertson.

The California-born winger is heading into the final year of his $7.75 million deal, and while his place as a franchise cornerstone feels secure, the reality of the Stars' salary cap situation makes his future one of the league's most fascinating storylines.

Since breaking into the NHL in 2020, Robertson has built a reputation as one of the league's most consistent point producers.

With Dallas firmly in "win-now" mode, his next contract could determine not only his future, but also how the team structures its Cup window.

What could a Jason Robertson extension look like for the Dallas Stars?

Robertson's résumé speaks for itself: back-to-back 80-point seasons and a career-best 109-point campaign in 2023.

His ability to drive offense in every situation cemented him as the Stars' top forward - at least until the blockbuster acquisition of Mikko Rantanen last spring.

That addition makes Robertson's negotiations more complicated. As insider Jeff Marek explained, Dallas views Rantanen's eight-year, $96 million contract as the ceiling for its forward group.

"If they want to keep Robertson, they'll be hoping his ask comes in below that number," Marek said.

His full comments were highlighted in Sporting News' latest update on the Robertson situation.

Marek also pushed back on the idea of this turning into another high-profile saga, like the drama surrounding Mitch Marner in Toronto last season.

"I don't think Jim Nill will let Robertson walk for nothing. A solution will have to be found," he added.

Personally, I think the Stars will do everything possible to keep Robertson long-term, but this season will be crucial.

If Dallas falls short again in the playoffs, the pressure to find cap space could make these negotiations even more urgent.
