NHL Makes Final Decision on Brad Marchand Incident Before Winter Classic

The NHL had one final controversial play to handle involving Florida Panthers forward Brad Marchand before the calendar moved to 2026.

The play in question occurred Tuesday night, as Marchand caught Montreal Canadiens defenseman Mike Matheson high with his right elbow just over a minute into overtime.

Sam Bennett slightly pushed Matheson along the boards before the defenseman moved the puck right as Marchand came across and delivered his hit.

According to a report from ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski, citing a league source, the NHL will not issue any supplemental discipline to Marchand after his overtime elbow to Matheson.

"According to a league source, there was a sense that Marchand's hit didn't rise to the level of supplemental discipline due to the force of the hit and because it was penalized within the game," Wyshynski wrote.

Officials assessed a two-minute roughing minor penalty on Marchand at 1:27 of overtime. Montreal scored the game-winner on the power play at 3:24, completing a 3–2 comeback after trailing 2–0 late in regulation.

While Marchand has a long history of suspensions in the NHL, having received eight throughout his career, and was fined earlier this season, the league determined that this particular incident did not merit additional action.

The decision sparked backlash among fans and analysts, including Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

“I admit I’m surprised,” Friedman wrote on X. “I thought there would be [a hearing] for the contact to the head.”

Added Friedman: "My suspicions on why it won’t be a suspension: NHL felt it was a penalty on the ice, that’s it. Marchand's elbow (was) low and tucked; Matheson (was) low to ice."

The timing of the league’s ruling is interesting, considering the Panthers’ next game is the 2026 Winter Classic on Friday night in Miami against the New York Rangers, with Marchand expected to be one of the headliners.

Wyshynski noted the Winter Classic spotlight may have factored into the NHL's decision, though no official source confirmed the upcoming event as part of the reasoning.

Marchand leads the Panthers with 23 goals and 45 points in 38 games. He was also named to Canada’s 2026 Olympic roster and was honored Tuesday for reaching 1,000 career points.

Florida (21–15–2) will face the Rangers in the Winter Classic at 8:00 p.m. ET on Friday.
