The Vegas Golden Knights will get to keep forward Nicolas Roy on the ice after the NHL reached a decision on his punishment for a controversial hit in Game 2 against the Edmonton Oilers.
Roy attempted to play the puck after it went airborne in overtime of his team's game against the Oilers, but he ended up hitting Oilers' Trent Frederic in the face, leading to a laceration.
Roy was whistled for a major penalty, sending the Oilers to a five-minute power play that they failed to capitalize on, though Edmonton won later on a goal by Leon Draisaitl.
The Knights were in danger of losing Roy for longer in the series after he met with the league, but ESPN reported that the NHL decided not to suspend Roy.
"The NHL Department of Player Safety announced the fine of $7,813, the maximum allowed under the collective bargaining agreement, after a disciplinary hearing with him," the report noted.
The Knights had been the victims of some bad luck in their Game 2 loss, with officials missing an apparent penalty in overtime after Oilers winger Viktor Arvidsson got his stick caught between Vegas defenseman Brayden McNabb's legs and sent him to the ice.
Arvidsson was not called for a tripping penalty, and the Oilers later scored the winning goal.
After the game, Vegas captain Mark Stone said it should have been called.
"It's pretty clear it's a penalty," Stone said. "His stick is between McNabb's legs, and he sends him headfirst into the boards. It's a pretty clear-cut penalty in my eyes and I think everybody's eyes, right? But that's hockey. You don't always get the calls."
