John Tortorella and Blue Jackets part ways

This morning we covered the news that broke last night that John Tortorella was leaving Columbus. We also added possible destinations. Now we will see if it all comes to fruition. Here are the statements from both Torts and GM Jarmo Kekalainen.

John Tortorella: “After discussion and consideration of the future direction of the team, Jarmo and I have come to a mutual agreement to part ways. I’d like to thank the Columbus Blue Jackets organization for the opportunity to coach this team and live in the great Columbus-area. It has been a privilege to work with the players, coaches and hockey operations staff, which is one of the best in the League. Also, I want to thank the CBJ fans and the community for the support they’ve given the team and for the work of the CBJ family in support of the community.”

Jarmo Kekalainen: “Torts and I have had numerous conversations throughout the season, and we have agreed that the time is right for both he and club to go our separate ways. He is a great coach and his accomplishments with our club over the past six seasons speak for themselves. He has played an integral role in our success since his arrival, and we are extremely grateful for his passion and commitment to the Blue Jackets and our city. He was the right coach at the right time and helped us establish a standard that we will carry forward.”

Ryan Miller retires, shares emotional moment with his parents in final game

Ryan Miller has played his last game in the NHL. In a touching and fitting moment captured by the broadcast crew, an emotional Miller spent some time with his mom and dad. For a moment, you can see the expression of a little boy looking at his parents to console him. A beautiful tribute to the two people that helped his dreams come true and to be there when it came to an end.

The 40 year-old goalie finishes as the winningest U.S. born goalie in NHL history with a final record of 391-289-96. He has the 2010 Vezina Trophy to his name and a Silver Medal in that year’s Olympics as well. Congrats on an amazing career.

Alex Ovechkin invests in Women’s Hockey

Alex Ovechkin continues to make his mark on the game, mostly in the men’s category. Now he will become an investor in the NWSL’s Washington Spirit to support women’s hockey.

“I think it’s important to support women and women’s professional athletes — not just in the United States, but all over the world,” Ovechkin told ESPN. “It was also important for me to support the D.C. community. I support everybody in this town. Me and my wife love to go watch a soccer game, watch football, and baseball. We all win. If I have this opportunity, I think it’s very important for me to do it, because it also shows we care.”
