Welcome back to another edition of NHL Predictions, with us here at Last Word On Hockey. Wednesday’s matchup between the Buffalo Sabres and the Utah Mammoth is the second of the season series. These teams played in Buffalo just over a week ago. Now, Utah will host Buffalo. The Sabres will be looking for a bit of revenge as the Mammoth took game 1 of this season series in their building. This is also a bit of a get-right game for each team. The Sabres have lost two straight in regulation since they played the Mammoth. And the Mammoth went on to lose three straight in regulation since beating Buffalo.
2025-2026 Season Series: Mammoth 1-0 Sabres
Time: 9:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST)
Location: Delta Center, Salt Lake City, Utah.
We know how the trade factors into this. If you’re unfamiliar, go ahead and read our last summary of the trade. That can be found here.
It’s impossible to talk about the state of the Buffalo Sabres without mentioning their injuries. Rasmus Dahlin, the captain, is currently on a leave of absence for a personal matter. Their star acquisition from the summer, Joshua Norris, is out. He has only played two periods of hockey this season. His backup to start at centre is Jiri Kulich. Kulich is going to miss considerable time with complications from a blood clot. Zach Benson is on IR with a lower-body injury. Jason Zucker is out with an illness. According to Head Coach Lindy Ruff told reporters Zucker hasn’t eaten solid foods in over 9 days.
When speaking with @JeremyWGR and @SneakyJoeSports this morning on WGR, Sabres coach Lindy Ruff shared that Jason Zucker hasn’t had solid food in nine days while battling the viral illness he’s dealing with. Zucker obviously has lost a considerable amount of weight.

Just a staggering amount of bad luck. However, there is one thing that will be interesting to watch for. Owen Power, can he fill the void left by Dahlin? He’s still young, at just 22 years of age. However, he has over 250 NHL games played under his belt. Can he prove he’s deserving of superstar minutes? Truly become a 1a-1b option with Dahlin? That will be what the Sabres have to look forward to with their road trip they’re currently embarking on. This is a great opportunity for Power to prove himself.
The Mammoth have struggled after looking great at the beginning of the year. They haven’t won a game in regulation since October 26th. And lost two straight coming into Buffalo the first time. Beat Buffalo in overtime. Then finished their road trip 0-3. After starting this season 8-2, they are now 9-7. The good news is that they’re finally back on home ice. Plus, the Sabres come into this as the worst team in the Eastern Conference. The Mammoth have to have the feeling that they can’t lose this game.
The good news is that Nick Schmaltz is continuing his hot start to the year. 9 goals, 10 assists in 16 games played so far. That’s incredible production for him. Clayton Keller, Logan Cooley, and Dylan Guenther are all having good starts to the year as well. The bigger concern growing in Utah is their goaltending. Karel Vejmelka is having a poor start to the season. In 11 games played, Vejmelka has a 2.91 goals against average and a .881 save percentage. The Sabres will rely on shaky goaltending to win this game, given how decimated their forward group is right now.
Both of these teams have their back against the wall, desperately needing a win. On one hand, you have the home team, coming off three straight losses, playing the worst team in the opposite conference. On the other side, there’s the team that is missing four of their top six forwards and their number one defenceman. The odds favour the team at home.
The prediction: Utah Mammoth 5 – Buffalo Sabres 1
Watch for JJ Peterka to score against his former team. Peterka struggled offensively over their road trip; he’s due for a bounce-back game on home ice. Keller scored the OT winner in their meetup last week. It feels likely he will find a point in this game one way or another.
