NHL prop bets for Feb. 16: Power-play points

Last night's circled spots for power-play points did yield a few power-play goals, but the players we opted for went just 1-for-5 on PPP bets.

Despite that, there's value to be had on this Wednesday night in the NHL, and I'm trusting the approach here can give us some power-play goals and solid prop hits.

If you're interested in the data points I look at before finding my favorite spots for power-play scoring, by all means take a look at the quick note here that summarizes the night's action.

I'm going to test out a new theory tonight. Instead of picking just two players from the top power-play line at .25u, I'm going to take the entire first line at .2u each.

That comes out to risking 1u per line, with the hopes that if they do indeed score, we get three bets right.

It's high-risk, but for science, I'm testing it out for all of you tonight.

Carolina

My favorite spot for a power-play goal to occur is in Carolina with the Hurricanes, which own an above-average power-play scoring rate.

What puts Carolina over the edge is Florida. The Panthers rank in the bottom 10 of penalty kill rate and the top 10 of most penalties allowed, which is what we're looking for here.

Florida should give the Canes PP chances and has struggled stopping them.

These teams have met twice so far this year, and Carolina has a power-play goal in both games.

One player in particular on the top PP line has registered a PPP in both games: Teuvo Teravainen. Teravainen has a PPP in six of his last nine games, very solid production.

Overall, this line is producing points throughout, so let's see what these players can do for us tonight.

PPP Bets & Odds on DraftKings

  • Teravainen (+158)
  • Vincent Trocheck (+285)
  • Tony DeAngelo (+168)
  • Sebastian Aho (+154)
  • Andrei Svechnikov (+168)

Winnipeg

The other game of interest I have circled is Minnesota-Winnipeg, and I'm going to opt for the Jets to record a power-play goal here.

Winnipeg owns the 12th-best power-play scoring rate, and Minnesota averages the second-most penalties per game. That high average, plus the Wild's penalty kill ranking 17th in their past 10, is enough for me to test out the Jets tonight.

In three games against Minnesota, Winnipeg has a power-play goal twice. Let's make it 75% for the year and bet on the entire first power-play line here.

PPP Bets & Odds on DraftKings

  • Blake Wheeler (+235)
  • Pierre-Luc Dubois (+240)
  • Kyle Connor (+142)
  • Mark Scheifele (+164)
  • Josh Morrissey (+320)

This is very much an experiment, so most definitely limit your unit sizes on these bets if you agree with the logic and want to test out this path.

Good luck tonight.
