NHL Rumors: Demidov, Canadiens, Demko, Canucks, Avalanche

In today’s NHL rumors rundown, the Montreal Canadiens have signed Ivan Demidov to a three-year entry-level deal. What’s next? Meanwhile, are the Vancouver Canucks more likely to extend or trade goaltender Thatcher Demko? Finally, Gabriel Landeskog was loaned to the AHL for a conditioning stint. Does that mean his NHL return is imminent?

Demidov Signs with the Canadiens

The Canadiens are expecting Ivan Demidov to arrive in Montreal by the end of the week after signing him to his entry-level contract. Demidov officially left the KHL on Tuesday and inked a deal that includes a $500,000 signing bonus, along with performance incentives—one of which rewards him if he wins the Conn Smythe Trophy.

When he debuts, the expectation is that he might be ready to play in his first NHL game on Monday against the Chicago Blackhawks. A Demidov vs. Connor Bedard matchup in Montreal will be a must-watch program.

Many believe that Demidov is going to make an immediate impact in Montreal. The idea that the Canadiens have battled their way into a playoff spot, Lane Hutson is having a Calder-caliber season, and now the Habs are adding Demidov to their lineup has fans extremely excited.

Thatcher Demko Emerging as Potential Trade Chip for Canucks

With the Vancouver Canucks nearing the end of a disappointing season — notwithstanding their incredible comeback on Tuesday night where they scored three goals in under a minute –, trade speculation is heating up—particularly surrounding star goaltender Thatcher Demko. According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, while Vancouver is focused on acquiring a No. 2 center this offseason, they may need to part with significant assets to get one. That could include Demko.

The 28-year-old netminder is entering the final year of his contract in 2025-26, and although extension talks have started, nothing is imminent. Both sides are reportedly exploring their options before talking again in the summer. If progress stalls, the Canucks may look to move Demko while his value remains high.

Dreger noted that general manager Patrik Allvin isn’t afraid to deal picks or prospects, but Demko’s name surfacing in trade rumors suggests Vancouver is open to more drastic measures as they reshape the roster.

There is also talk that Rick Tocchet still needs time to decide his future and whether he wants to sign long-term as the coach for the Canucks.

Landeskog Loaned to Eagles of the AHL

As per Chris Johnston (and then confirmed by the team), “Significant development in Colorado, where the Avs have loaned Gabriel Landeskog to the AHL’s Colorado Eagles on a conditioning assignment. Landeskog hasn’t played a game since the 2022 Stanley Cup Final.” This is an indication that the Avalanche will be looking to activate Landeskog for playoff action.

He can play up to three games in the AHL without having to be activated off of LTIR. The Avs can also request for two additional games if they want to, making it five games in total. Given how long he’s been out of action, it seems unlikely the NHL would deny that request. The Avalanche have three games remaining in their season.

Avalanche general manager Chris MacFarland suggested back in March that Landerskog could return for the Avalanche in the playoffs. “I think you guys can figure out where this is kind of going,” MacFarland said. It appears that things are trending in the right direction.
