In today’s NHL rumors rundown, NHL insider Pierre LeBrun reports the Carolina Hurricanes are going to keep pressing to acquire Mitch Marner. Meanwhile, Henri Jokiharju says that he’s already feeling fairly comfortable with his new team and is open to signing an extension with the Boston Bruins. Finally, Brock Boeser’s camp wasn’t happy about the public comments GM Patrik Allvin made about the forward and his value at the trade deadline. Will that impact Boeser’s willingness to sign an extension?
TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reported on Monday that the Hurricanes intend to use what will be close to $36 million in cap space to take a run at Mitch Marner in free agency. Assuming the Toronto Maple Leafs winger makes it to market, Carolina will put an offer together that they hope will entice Marner to consider them.
LeBrun added, “So watch out—Carolina is looking to take big swings.” He added, “The Hurricanes are probably not done chasing Mitch.”
It will be intriguing to see if Marner seriously considers Carolina as an option. He declined to waive his no-trade clause to go there at the deadline, which might have been less about joining the Hurricanes and more about not wanting to leave the Maple Leafs.
Defenseman Henri Jokiharju has been with the Boston Bruins for just over a week, but the Finnish blueliner already feels rejuvenated by the change of scenery. “A hundred percent. Lots of energy and a new life, hockey-wise,” Jokiharju said when asked about how things were going as he gets comfortable. He was traded by the Sabres to the Bruins.
Steve Conroy of The Boston Herald writes:
“Jokiharju said that there has been no talk about an extension with the B’s just yet, though he’d be willing to discuss one before the July 1 opening bell for free agency. Whether an offer is forthcoming will most likely depend on how he performs for the team between now and the end of the season, whenever it comes. If it goes beyond the April 15 regular season finale, chances are Jokiharju will have done something right. …”

Jokiharju says he holds no ill feelings towards the Sabres. “Business is business, and there’s no hard feelings,” he commented. He added that joining a team with a familiar face on it in Casey Mittelstadt, made the transition easier. “We played four or five years together in Buffalo, so that was a big help.”
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, after Allvin made comments seemingly slighting Brock Boeser’s trade value, Boeser’s agent and the long-time Canuck were not pleased. While he’s not completely closed off to an extension in Vancouver, it feels like Boeser will lean toward testing the open market this summer.
Friedman said on the “Saturday Headlines” segment on Hockey Night in Canada that no player ever wants to hear that said about them. He explained:
“It was a really odd media conference yesterday and I’m sure Boeser wasn’t happy with some of the things that were said, but I just tried to get to the bottom of it. The thing is that the Vancouver Canucks indicated nothing less than the first rounder for Boeser, they weren’t taking anything less than the first rounder and they didn’t get it, so they decided to hold the player and we’ll see where it goes from here.”
