We’ve got some more NHL rumours to begin the weekend. Teams are gearing up for training camp, which is scheduled to take place later this month. However, thoughts of next year and beyond are on the minds of general managers across the league. Contract talks on several fronts are going on between players entering the last year of their deals. We’ve been talking about some of the big-ticket players seeking deals. However, many pending restricted free agents may be getting contract offers before next summer rolls around.
The Columbus Blue Jackets are facing multiple challenges in the lead-up to the season. This edition of NHL rumours gives an update to a couple of their younger players.
All NHL rumours come from the original source and are subject to change.

Analysis: Let’s tackle the latter topic with Chinakhov and his trade request, which he made over the summer. The Russian cited “misunderstandings” with head coach Dean Evason as the main reason for the request. However, it seems that Chinakhov has handled things in a professional manner.
The youngster was the first Russian player to arrive in preparation for the season. Portzline also mentioned the pleasant exchanges between Chinakhov and general manager Don Waddell. It was also pointed out by Portzline that there doesn’t seem to be acrimony like there has been with other trade requests. We’ve seen things get tense when Patrik Laine and Pierre-Luc Dubois wanted a deal.
Portzline also gave an update on contract talks between the Blue Jackets and Fantilli. Waddell mentioned that contract talks are on the back burner for now. There was some hope Fantilli would sign an extension.
However, that won’t happen before the season. Despite this, Blue Jackets fans shouldn’t worry too much at this point.
Let’s circle back to Chinakhov and unpack what’s going on with the trade request. It seems that the temperature may have cooled down with the Russian and management. Could there be a way back for the young forward and he pulls back his trade request?
Portzline points out that there’s going to have to be a heart-to-heart talk between Evason and Chinakhov if they want to move forward. However, this isn’t the first time that the young forward has hinted at a trade request.
Let’s shift over to Fantilli and his contract talks, which will have to wait. Waddell spoke to Fantilli’s agent, Pat Brisson, and said the Fantilli camp is in no rush to have talks. Some fans could call that concerning, but it’s pretty standard for a young player to hold off on talks.
It seems that Fantilli and Brisson are banking on another strong campaign where the young forward makes more progression in his game. Another great season will give him the negotiating power when they do sit down and talk. We could definitely see Fantilli end up becoming the highest-paid player on the team,
