Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Evgeni Malkin had his home burglarized over the weekend.
The burglary occurred on Saturday, January 11 right around the time when the Penguins were hosting the Ottawa Senators in a big showdown since both teams are fighting to get one of the last two playoff spots in the Eastern Conference.
According to TMZ, Malkin's home security system was down during the break-in and all three of Malkin's Stanley Cup rings were stolen.
KDKA's Jennifer Borrasso was first with the news on Tuesday night following the Penguins' 4-2 loss to the Seattle Kraken.
The Penguins released a statement after this report came out, asking for everyone to give Malkin his privacy.
"Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin's home was burglarized this past weekend. Details of the situation will not be made public as this is an ongoing investigation. We are working closely with local authorities and team security. Malkin has requested that his privacy be respected during this time and we will have no further comment on the matter," the statement read.
Malkin isn't the first big athlete to have his house broken into these last few months. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, tight end Travis Kelce, and Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow have also had their homes broken into.
The Penguins won three Stanley Cups in 2009, 2016, and 2017 during the Sidney Crosby/Evgeni Malkin/Kris Letang era. They beat the Detroit Red Wings in 2009, the San Jose Sharks in 2016, and the Nashville Predators in 2017.
Malkin has been one of the best players of his era, compiling 506 goals and 1,329 points in 1,187 games.
Stay tuned for more details on this situation.
