NHL Sunday afternoon bets: Two overs to consider

It's a packed day of sports on this Sunday, with afternoon games in both the NHL and NBA. As we get our day together, let's make sure we don't miss out on some of the early action for hockey.

I've got two plays that get going in the next few hours, let me highlight both spots.

St. Louis-Chicago over 6 total goals (-105 DK)

This is my favorite game for scoring Sunday, and since I think there is an edge for both teams, we'll load up the over instead of focus on one team.

I think it should be the Blues who do the bulk of the scoring here, averaging 3.7 goals per game in their past 10 road contests.

The Blackhawks are allowing 4.4 goals per game in their last five at home, and with the constant stream of shots they see against them, I'd expect four goals from the Blues here.

St. Louis has been a lot looser to shots and goals on the road, allowing 33.5 shots per game in their last 10 and 3.2 goals allowed in their past five.

Chicago is coming off a massive scoring barrage against the Devils on Friday night, finishing with eight goals.

Three of those goals came on the power play, and that's where the Blackhawks hold an edge in this one. St. Louis is averaging the eighth-most penalties per game in its last 20. Patrick Kane and this top power-play unit should have their chances to score on a man-up advantage.

These two teams met two weeks ago, a 5-1 St. Louis win. That would be a push at this total number, and I'm OK risking a push at this even number. 

Let's get a win, I'm thinking 4-3 Blues take it.

Winnipeg-Arizona over 5.5 total goals (-125 DK)

These two teams don't typically scream "offensive explosion," so I understand if you had to look twice at this pick. Let me explain.

The Jets are averaging 3.0 goals per game in their past 10, a fine if not unspectacular number. Arizona sees 36.3 shots against them at home in their past 10, which is the third-highest number in the league.

Karel Vejmelka is expected in net for the Coyotes in this one, which should yield plenty of Jets goals. Vejmelka is allowing 3.51 goals per game this season and has allowed more than goals in four of his last five starts.

So, couple a barrage of shots with a below-average goalie, and I see Winnipeg pouring in 3-4 goals Sunday.

I think Arizona can do enough to chip in here and reach six total goals. In their past six games, the Coyotes are averaging 3.17 goals per contests.

Winnipeg has let in 3.6 goals per game in their past five on the road, which is the eighth-highest mark in the NHL.

Winnipeg also averages the fifth-most penalties per game, so the hope here is that Clayon Keller and Arizona's top power-play line put one in while skating 5-on-4, similar logic to the above game.
