Ahead of their first preseason tune-up against the Ottawa Senators on Sunday, the Toronto Maple Leafs played a scrimmage Saturday to get back into game shape.
Despite the offensive power across the Leafs roster, Nick Robertson was the only player to find the back of the net in the Blue vs. White exhibition, scoring a goal on a breakaway, then later adding an empty netter.

Speaking to the media after the scrimmage, Robertson shared his initial thoughts on the match and how it feels to get two in the back of the net.
“It was good, it was fun,” he said. “I was happy to get in the scrimmage there and just be with the guys. Yeah, good to just kind of break off the rust before preseason starts.”
Asked about his breakaway goal in particular, he was straightforward in his approach.
“I just thought, quick shot, just be quick there,” Robertson said.
The 24-year-old forward is no stranger to scoring in exhibition matches. Through last year’s preseason, he tallied five goals across three games, but unfortunately, he wasn’t able to find that same offensive spark through the regular season. He shared his perspective on these early contests ahead of tomorrow’s match against the Senators.
“Everyone takes exhibition games differently,” he said. “For me, a game’s a game, I gotta get out there and execute well. I don’t take it lightly, it’s a chance for me to get the rust off and get a feel for the game.”
Preseason contests are especially important for a player like Robertson, who currently sits on the bubble of a roster spot with the Maple Leafs. To claim one of the coveted places on Toronto’s bottom six this year, he’ll need to prove that he can contribute across multiple parts of the game. Nevertheless, Robertson is trying to avoid getting in his head with the preseason kicking off tomorrow.
“Just simplicity, getting a feel for the puck,” he said, of his goals this week. “Not trying to overcomplicate or overdo anything. You’ve got to get your lungs back too. As much as you train in the summer, you don’t really get the rust off until you start playing games, so I look forward to that.”
As he continues to work on his execution and consistency, he’ll look to show what he’s worked on this summer. Robertson still has a lot to prove if he wants a spot with the Leafs this season, and that hard work is already well underway.
