No Surprise: Blackhawks Give Out 4 Qualifying Offers

The Chicago Blackhawks are taking care of internal business prior to free agency, and frankly it comes with little surprise. With restricted free agent qualifying offers due, the Blackhawks have given out qualifying offers to Connor Bedard, Ethan Del Mastro, Kevin Korchinski, and Drew Commesso. Only Ryan Mast and Dmitri Kuzmin did not receive offers, making them unrestricted free agents on Wednesday.

Frankly, none of this information comes as a surprise despite its importance in the grand scheme of the NHL offseason. Now, the Blackhawks retain the negotiating rights to all four players, with new contracts as the next objective. Bedard is certainly the most important name on the list, but all four players will likely be back with the organization next season, unless they are traded.

Some may simply sign the qualifying offer, which varies based on the player’s previous contract. PuckPedia does a fantastic job of breaking that all down here. That said, all four players made less than $1.25 million last season, meaning their offer is for 110% of their previous AAV.

Frankly, Del Mastro, Korchinski, and Commesso all have a fair chance of accepting the qualifying offer. Bedard will certainly receive a franchise-player-level contract. His contract has also grabbed the most headlines. When these will occur, no one knows. However, the Blackhawks now have time to keep these young pieces in the fold.
