As the New York Islanders get set for the upcoming season, the team will be hopeful to take a step forward. However, this does appear to be a team that is being built for long-term success.

With the start of the new campaign right around the corner, the Islanders are going to be an interesting team to watch. While they didn’t make a ton of changes to their roster this summer, there is reason to believe that with some returning players and Peter DeBoer as the head coach, they will be better.

While the team is focused on being better, there is clearly an eye toward the future. Mathieu Darche didn’t trade any of his talented prospects for more established talent, and the Islanders are trying to create long-term success. However, not everyone believes that they will achieve that.

Corey Pronman of The Athletic recently projected what the league would look like in 2030. For the Islanders, they came in ranked 19th, which is shocking considering the young talent that they currently have and that is on the way.

Long-Term Outlook is Shocking

New York coming in ranked 19th in the 2030 outlook is pretty shocking to see and a bit puzzling. The Islanders are a team that is currently featuring one of the best young players in the league with Matthew Schaefer.

The young defenseman was the top rookie in the league last year and is still just 18 years old. By the time 2030 comes around, he still won’t even be 25 years old. Schaefer alone seems like a reason that the team should be ranked higher, but there is other good talent to consider too.

At forward, the Islanders have players like Victor Eklund and Calum Ritchie, who are emerging talents at the forward spot. Furthermore, while Schaefer is featured on the blueline, there is a lot more talent on the way for the group as well.

One spot that could be a bit of an issue at that point could be in the net. Ilya Sorokin is currently 31 years old and would be approaching his late 30s at this time. He is a key piece for the team, and finding someone as good as him would be challenging.

Overall, with one of the best prospect groups in the league right now, the Islanders not being viewed favorably for the future feels like a miss.
