Pittsburgh Penguins defensemen Erik Karlsson and Marcus Pettersson have earned bronze medals at the world championships in Czechia.
Sweden defeated Canada, 4-2, n the third-place game Sunday on the strength of three unanswered goals during the final period.
Karlsson scored perhaps the most important of those, beating Canadian goalie Jordan Binnington with a slap shot from near the blue line at 9:35 of third to tie the game, 2-2.
Karlsson served as Sweden’s captain for the tournament.
Penguins winger Michael Bunting played for Canada, working on a line with Dylan Cozens of Buffalo and Calgary’s Andrew Mangiapane.
Czechia and Switzerland will meet for the gold medal later Sunday.
