The Edmonton Oilers have been forced to start the season without one of their most reliable forwards, but that could soon change.
Zach Hyman has been working toward a comeback after months of recovery from a serious wrist injury suffered during last spring’s Western Conference Final against the Dallas Stars.
The 33-year-old winger participated fully in practice this week for the first time since surgery, taking another step toward returning to the lineup after already participating in optional skates before.
While his earliest possible activation from long-term injured reserve was November 1 against the Chicago Blackhawks, the team says his debut will come later.
"When you make the other team defend it's such an easier game to play."

Head coach Kris Knoblauch said Wednesday that Hyman remains “week-to-week” but admitted he looks close to ready.
“He’s raring to go. He looks ready to go,” Knoblauch said. “I want to put him in, but our medical staff is holding him back. I don't think it's fair.”
Added Knoblauch: “He'll still be week-to-week. We said it was bare minimum on November 1, and it won't be, but it'll be at least a week after that, and hopefully soon. We want him back. I think he looks ready, but obviously we're looking at the long picture and making sure that we don't have any setbacks.”
"I’m excited to come back & join the group & bring some new energy."

Hyman said he shares the same optimism as Knoblauch, making it clear he wants to be back as soon as possible.
“I’m going to tell you I’m ready to go because that’s how I feel,” Hyman said. “But at the end of the day, the doctors are the ones who are there to protect you from yourself and make sure that when you do return, you are able and ready. Having said that, they know more than I do. But I feel really good. I feel close.”
Hyman, who scored 27 goals last season, is expected to resume his top-line and power-play roles once cleared to return to the Oilers lineup.
Edmonton will face the New York Rangers on Thursday at 9 p.m. ET in the Oilers' last game of the month.
