Oilers' Evander Kane reveals gruesome nature of wrist injury

Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane met with the media on Friday and revealed just how bad the cut to his wrist turned out to be.

It sounds gruesome.

Kane was injured earlier this week when his wrist was cut by the skate blade of Tampa Bay Lightning forward Patrick Maroon.

He was rushed off the ice and taken to a local hospital immediately for surgery. It turned out that Maroon's skate blade cut Kane's wrist all the way down to the bone.

His wrist is current immobilized, and he is expected to miss at least the next three to four months.

"I was lucky then and I am lucky now," added Kane, saying that he should be able to make a full recovery

Kane signed a four-year, $20.5 million contract with the Oilers this offseason and was off to a strong start. He scored five goals with eight assists in his first 13 games before the injury.

Skate injuries can be extremely dangerous in the NHL, and there have been some brutal ones over the years. Kane's wrist being cut down to the bone is certainly on the list of the worst, but there have also been incidents with former Buffalo Sabres goalie Clint Malarchuk and former Florida Panthers forward Richard Zednik that were life-threatening. Both players had their throats cut by skates, resulting in terrifying on-ice moments. Current San Jose Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson also had his Achilles tendon torn when he played for the Ottawa Senators due to a skate blade.
