Oilers Get Discouraging Update on Evander Kane's Injury Timeline
James Carey Lauder-USA TODAY Sports

Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane, who has yet to play this season after undergoing offseason surgery, may not return to action until late in the regular season--if at all.

According to Oilers insider Bob Stauffer, via Oilers Daily on X, March appears to be the earliest realistic timeline for Kane’s return.

That date could lead the Oilers to hold him out until the postseason if he's not fully ready, when his $5.125 million would not count anymore against the cap allowing Edmonton to use it to add another player if they want to during the regular season.

“Per Bob Stauffer, it sounds like the earliest we see Evander Kane back with the Oilers is March,” Oilers Daily reported on X.

If Stauffer's timeline is accurate, Kane will miss nearly (if not more) 60 games of the 2024-25 Oilers' campaign.

Kane’s offseason surgeries addressed two hernias, two torn hip adductors, and two torn abdominal muscles—all of those injuries sustained during Edmonton’s run to Game 7 of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final.

Meanwhile, the latest official update shared by head coach Kris Knoblauch came on Dec. 10 when he addressed Kane’s recovery in a cautious way.

“You’re not going to see or hear anything on him for at least a month,” Knoblauch said, adding that Kane is adhering to his rehabilitation schedule. “He’s got a schedule that he comes in on certain days and gets treatment, whether we’re on the road or at home."

Since signing with the Oilers in 2021, Kane has scored 111 points (62 goals, 49 assists) in 161 games while appearing in 47 postseason contests scoring 13 points split into six goals and seven assists.
