Edmonton Sports Talk host Tom Gazzola noted on the Oil Stream Podcast that the Edmonton Oilers are being very proactive in moving Jack Campbell. Not only that, but he says the conclusion to Jack Campbell with the Oilers is closer than initially anticipated. He doesn’t believe it’s a buyout, which means a trade seems imminent.
This news could explain why the Oilers have been making front page news with reports they’ve been scouting other teams and meeting with opposing GMs. In the last week, it was said that Mike Grier (San Jose Sharks GM) was in town. On Sunday, Oilers’ assistant GM Brad Holland was at the Montreal Canadiens versus Nashville Predators game. All three teams have goaltenders the Oilers might like and the Canadiens are said to be actively trying to move one of their three netminders.
The only thing about Montreal is that they likely don’t want to take a goalie back in a trade.
The Sharks appear to be a logical choice. Their season goal should prioritize future assets. Trading Mackenzie Blackwood and executing a buyout in the summer on Campbell could benefit them while adding assets as part of the deal.
The assumption by many is that Edmonton would be trying acquire a goaltender in any deal that moves Campbell out. That may not be the case. If Calvin Pickard can do a suitable job as a backup, there’s no need for Edmonton to rush things. Specifically, the Oilers don’t need to make a panic trade for someone. Instead, this could be a two-step process. First, move Campbell and free up the cap space. Second, keep an eye out for a goaltender that may shake loose over the next month or two.
Pickard was rock steady and if he plays well, he gives the Oilers options. If he’s making solid, timely saves, the Oilers can avoid a terrible trade or rushing Campbell back into the NHL.

"Amed Rosario would be a good fit for Yankees," the New York Post's Jon Heyman reported Monday. "Played a lot of 3B this year. .802 lifetime OPS vs. lefties (.845 this year). Suarez is top target but many would qualify as upgrades." Rosario is hitting .271 with five home runs and 18 RBIs this season for the Washington Nationals. But the nine-year veteran has big-market experience, making his MLB debut with the New York Mets in 2017. The 29-year-old is making $2 million this season and will be a free agent after the World Series, according to Spotrac. But wait, there's more. "Other possible third-base trade targets include Royals All-Star Maikel Garcia — in theory, Kansas City would have interest in one of the Yankees’ outfielders to play left field for them," The Athletic's Jim Bowden reported Monday. Garcia, who made the American League roster for the 2025 MLB All-Star Game, is hitting .291 this season with eight home runs and 41 RBIs. The 25-year-old is in his fourth big-league season and is making almost $775,000 this season, according to Spotrac. Garcia still has four years of arbitration eligibility remaining, so he won't come cheap. Packers make major position change in hopes of replacing Jaire Alexander
The Green Bay Packers are going to extreme lengths to replace former Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander, who was released earlier this spring before signing with the Baltimore Ravens. After trying wide receiver Bo Melton out at cornerback during minicamp practices earlier this summer, the Packers appear to have made that position change official, as training camp gets underway. Packers making Bo Melton a cornerback During the first practice of training camp, Melton, who the Packers originally signed in December 2022, was working with the cornerbacks and had officially changed positions. As the summer kicks into gear, the Packers need to figure out how to add quality depth at cornerback, not just to replace Alexander but also to fill out a depth chart at a position that’s critical in defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley’s scheme. Prior to changing positions, Melton had caught 24 passes, through his first 22 career NFL games, for 309 yards and one touchdown. However, given the influx of young talent at wide receiver and a desperate need at cornerback, head coach Matt LaFleur, Hafley and the Packers clearly believe that the 5-foot-11 and 189-pound former Rutgers standout has a clearer path to the field and adds more value in the secondary than at wide receiver.
Charlotte Hornets Reportedly Release 24-Year-Old Guard
Damion Baugh spent his rookie season in the NBA playing for the Charlotte Hornets. The 24-year-old had averages of 7.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.0 steals per contest while shooting 32.3% from the field in 15 games. According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the Hornets will now waive Baugh. Via Scotto: "The Charlotte Hornets are waiving two-way player Damion Baugh, league sources told @hoopshype . Charlotte is waiving Baugh to clear a spot for the addition of Antonio Reeves on a two-way contract." ESPN's Shams Charania had first reported that the Hornets were signing Reeves. Via Charania: "The Charlotte Hornets are signing guard Antonio Reeves to a two-way NBA deal, sources tell ESPN. The 2024 Pelicans second-round pick averaged 6.9 points and 40% 3-point shooting in 44 games as a rookie last season."
