The Edmonton Oilers added stability to their back end on Sunday, signing defencemen Shakir Mukhamadullin and Spencer Stastney to new contracts ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Mukhamadullin agreed to a two-year extension carrying an average annual value of $1.75 million, while Stastney signed a one-year deal worth $1.525 million per season.
Mukhamadullin, 24, arrived in Edmonton on July 1 as part of the trade that sent Darnell Nurse to the San Jose Sharks. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound left-shot defenceman played 50 games for San Jose last season, averaging 17:09 of ice time while setting career highs with five goals and seven assists for 12 points. He also finished with 22 penalty minutes, 63 blocked shots, 35 hits, seven takeaways and logged 70:02 on the penalty kill.
Originally selected by the New Jersey Devils in the first round of the 2020 NHL Draft, the Ufa, Russia native has appeared in 83 NHL games over parts of three seasons with the Sharks. During that stretch, he has recorded seven goals, 15 assists and 22 points, along with 34 penalty minutes while averaging 17:37 per game. His new contract will leave him as a restricted free agent with arbitration rights when the deal expires.
Stastney, 26, was acquired from the Nashville Predators on Dec. 12 in exchange for a 2027 third-round draft pick. He played 30 games with Nashville before joining Edmonton, collecting one goal and eight assists. After making his Oilers debut the following night in Toronto, he appeared in 36 games for Edmonton, scoring one goal while averaging 16:02 of ice time. Across both teams, he finished the 2025-26 campaign with career highs of 66 games and 10 points (two goals, eight assists).
The University of Notre Dame graduate has played 117 NHL games, producing four goals and 15 assists while averaging 15:52 per game. He has also accumulated 125 blocked shots, 31 takeaways and 171:44 of penalty-killing time. At five-on-five with the Oilers last season, Stastney and Ty Emberson outscored opponents 8-5 in 225 minutes and controlled 52.7 percent of the expected goal share, although Stastney did not appear in any of Edmonton’s six playoff games against the Anaheim Ducks. His one-year contract will make him an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2026-27 season.
Following both signings, the Oilers have $5.925 million in salary-cap space with 22 players on their active roster.
