Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl recorded the 1,000th point of his National Hockey League career on Tuesday evening.

Draisaitl, 30, picked up the secondary assist as Zach Hyman scored a 5-on-3 power-play goal to give the Oilers a 1-0 lead midway through the first period of Tuesday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins at PPG Paints Arena.

Just 14 seconds later, Draisaitl picked up a primary helper for point No. 1,001, with Oilers captain Connor McDavid scoring on the ensuing 5-on-4 to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Draisaitl now has 17 goals and 45 points through 34 games this season, and 1,001 points (416 goals, 585 points) in 824 career games over parts of 12 seasons in Edmonton.

The Oilers originally selected Draisaitl with the No. 3 overall pick in the first round of the 2014 NHL Draft. The Cologne, Germany product spent his junior career with the WHL’s Prince Albert Raiders and Kelowna Rockets before turning pro with the Oilers on a full-time basis in the 2015-16 season.

Draisaitl emerged as one of the league’s top players in the 2018-19 season, reaching the 50-goal and 100-point marks for the first time in his NHL career. The 6’2″ forward has surpassed 100 points each season since, with the exception of the lockout-shortened 2020-21 campaign.

The Oilers are the first and only team in NHL history to have five players score 1,000 points with them: Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri, Mark Messier, McDavid, and now Draisaitl. In addition, Draisaitl required the third-fewest games among active players to reach the 1,000-point mark, trailing only McDavid and Sidney Crosby.

After one period of play on Tuesday, the Oilers led the Penguins by a 2-1 score, with Tommy Novak potting the lone goal for the hosts. The Oilers entered the game with a 15-12-6 record and 36 points in 33 games, enough to place in the Western Conference’s first wild card playoff spot.
