The Edmonton Oilers are coming off their second straight loss in the Stanley Cup Final. Edmonton has seen a lot of success over the past few seasons, but the team hasn't been able to reach the ultimate goal of winning it all.
This fact has sent the front office into scramble mode to figure out how to get over the hump. Edmonton has been looking all over the league this offseason for roster upgrades, and it has reportedly brought them to look into an All-Star.
That would be Jonathan Marchessault of the Nashville Predators, who has been dangled in trade talks this summer. Marchessault is coming off his first season with the Predators, and it seems that Nashville may want to move on.
NHL insider Nick Kypreos of SportsNet listed a few teams who have shown interest in going after Marchessault this offseason. The Edmonton Oilers were among them, and the pairing could make some sense.
"There are several teams that have a need to add scoring into their top-six mix, including Ottawa, Toronto and Edmonton. The question would be if he'd lift his no-movement clause to go anywhere. Marchessault's contract runs another four seasons with a $5.5-million cap hit," Kypreos wrote.
Marchessault saw a decline with the Predators, scoring just 21 goals and 35 assists for the season. The veteran All-Star didn't quite fit in with the Predators, and both sides may be looking to part ways.
Adding Marchessault to the mix could be a strong move for the Oilers, bringing him his scoring ability. But Marchessault also knows how to finish the job and would bring title experience to the team.
Marchessault won the Stanley Cup with the Vegas Golden Knights a few years ago, and he could help this Oilers team in terms of leadership. It seems that Edmonton could still be making some moves this summer, with the veteran being an option.
