Oilers loan prospect James Stefan to AHL’s Condors

The Edmonton Oilers made a small transaction on Sunday afternoon.

Following Saturday’s 6-2 win over the Utah Mammoth, the team announced that prospect James Stefan has been loaned to the American Hockey League’s Bakersfield Condors. The forward was injured to begin the season, hence why the move came so late.

Stefan is the son of 1999 first overall pick Patrik Štefan, yes, the same Štefan who did not ice it with the Dallas Stars during the 2006-07 season. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, where his father played at the time, Stefan played the majority of his junior hockey with the Western Hockey League’s Portland Winter Hawks, scoring 11 goals and 256 points in 254 regular season games, then another 17 goals and 33 points in 38 postseason games.

Undrafted, Stefan signed his entry-level contract with the Oilers in March 2024, and played his first professional game in 2024-25. Stefan played 45 games with the Condors and scored just three goals. He was far more productive in the ECHL that season, scoring six goals and nine points in 12 games, with another four goals and six points in 13 playoff games.

Last season Stefan spent most of the season with the ECHL’s Fort Wayne Komets, scoring 17 goals and 34 points in 38 games. He appeared in six games for the Condors last season, but was held pointless.

Stefan joins a struggling Condors team, who are just 2-3-0 over their first five games. Their four points are tied for fewest in the Pacific Division, but they’ve had strong performances from Quinn Hutson, Aku Räty, and Damien Carfagna. He’ll inject some skill in the lineup, but is still a long way from contending for a spot on the Oilers, much less becoming a full-time National Hockey League player.

We’ll see how Stefan develops in what should be his second season mainly spent with the Condors.
