Oilers Officially Name Their Starting Goalie Moving Forward

The roller-coaster ride that has been Edmonton’s goaltending situation this season has taken another turn, though this one shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise.

After Sunday’s morning skate, Oilers HC Kris Knoblauch revealed that Connor Ingram will be the team’s starting goalie moving forward, while noting that Tristan Jarry needs to regain his game and confidence through improved play in practice.

TSN Edmonton reporter Ryan Rishaug shared the update on X (formerly Twitter).

Rishaug wrote:

“Knoblauch acknowledging today that Connor Ingram is their starting goalie and will be given starts as such. He also said they’ll need Jarry down the stretch, and that improvement for him starts in practice to find confidence,”

The 28-year-old Ingram has posted a 9-6-2 record in his first year with the Oilers, sporting a 2.79 goals-against average, .891 save percentage, and one shutout across those 18 starts.

On the flip side, Jarry, 30, has struggled mightily since arriving in Edmonton, going 7-6-1 with a 4.17 goals-against average, .855 save percentage, and one shutout in 13 starts.

Things had already been leaning in Ingram’s favor in recent weeks, as he started six of the Oilers’ nine games coming out of the Olympic break. Combine that with Jarry’s struggles, and the decision for Knoblauch and company became rather obvious — though certainly not what they had envisioned when sending Stuart Skinner, Brett Kulak, and a 2029 second-round draft pick to acquire the two-time All-Star.

While Ingram has seized the opportunity and deserves to continue in that role, there’s no question the Oilers need Jarry to get back closer to the level he’s capable of. As impressive as it’s been to see Ingram return to the NHL and provide solid goaltending, Edmonton will need both to be available and consistent if they want any chance at making another run to the Stanley Cup Finals.
