Following their thrilling Game 5 win vs. the Stars, the Oilers went into the locker room and Facetimed injured Zach Hyman, making him feel part of the celebrations.
Zach Hyman wasn't physically present with the Edmonton Oilers when they captured the Western Conference title Thursday night, but he was definitely present in spirit, and virtually, too.
After the Oilers defeated the Dallas Stars, the postgame celebration bled into the locker room, where Leon Draisaitl FaceTimed Hyman.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Corey Perry were also on the call, allowing their injured teammate to share in the moment.
Hyman, 32, hurt his wrist in Game 4 when he crashed into Dallas' Mason Marchment and is expected to miss the rest of the playoffs after having surgery.
'Obviously, it's extremely disappointing to lose [Hyman], devastated for him,' Edmonton captain Connor McDavid said Thursday morning. 'He wants to be out there, wants to make a difference, and so we'll miss him a lot.'
Hurt players do not typically make road playoff trips due to space limitations, but that could change if Edmonton reaches the point where it can win the Stanley Cup in Florida. Hyman will likely be there when the team plays its games in Edmonton.
Hyman has been a playoff constant since signing with the Oilers in 2021. He led the NHL with 16 playoff goals last season and has 35 goals and 25 assists in 68 playoff games for Edmonton.
Only Leon Draisaitl has more playoff goals for the Oilers during that span. The Oilers, minus Hyman, get a few days off prior to facing the Florida Panthers in a rematch of last year's Stanley Cup Final.
Game 1 goes Wednesday, June 4, at Rogers Place in Edmonton. The series moves to Florida on Monday, June 9, with a potential Game 7 to be played on Friday, June 20, back in Alberta.
