Oilers' Potential Trade Target Emerges After Tristan Jarry News

The Edmonton Oilers placed newly-acquired goalie Tristan Jarry on injured reserve Friday after he left Thursday’s win over the Boston Bruins with a lower-body injury.

Edmonton traded fellow goalie Stuart Skinner to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Jarry a week earlier, and the new Oilers goalie was 3–0–0 with the Oilers before exiting the game.

By placing him on injured reserve, Jarry will be forced to miss three games as the Oilers wait to know more about the actual extent of his injury and how much time he'll miss.

Jarry's injury has reopened trade talk about the Oilers' potential chase for another goalie in a trade, and conversations with the Buffalo Sabres, targeting goaltender Alex Lyon, emerged on Friday.

According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, discussing the news on Friday's episode of the "32 Thoughts" podcast, Edmonton “called the Sabres a couple times in recent weeks” and has “done their research” on Lyon.

Per Friedman, the Oilers first looked into the 33-year-old last summer and called Buffalo again earlier this season.

“Edmonton’s spoken about him,” Friedman said. “They looked into him again this season. It comes down to, is Buffalo ready to do this, and it also comes down to how seriously Jarry might be hurt.”

With Jarry out, the Oilers recalled Connor Ingram from the Bakersfield Condors to back up Calvin Pickard, who owns a .858 save percentage and 3.91 goals-against average. Ingram’s AHL numbers are worse, with an .856 SV% and 4.04 GAA across 11 games.

Lyon, meanwhile, has a .904 save percentage and a 7–6–3 record this season. The Sabres goalie carries a $1.5 million cap hit and is part of a three-man rotation in Buffalo, something new GM Jarmo Kekalainen could bring to an end by removing one goalie from it.
