Amid a crazy Monday before free agency opens on Tuesday, the Edmonton Oilers announced their development camp roster.
There will be 27 prospects participating in the camp, headlined by top prospect Matt Savoie, who played four National Hockey League games with the Oilers in 2024-25. Moreover, the Oilers’ second-best prospect, Sam O’Reilly, will participate, as will his London Knights’ teammate, William Nicholl.
All five of the players the Oilers recently drafted will also attend camp. Forward Tommy Lafrenière was selected in the third round, forward David Lewandowski was selected in the fourth round, defenceman Asher Barnett was selected in the fifth round, netminder Daniel Salonen was selected in the sixth round, and Aidan Park was selected in the seventh round.
One notable prospect who is missing is their 2024 second-round pick, netminder Eemil Vinni. Last season with HIFK’s under-20 team, the Finnish goaltender played seven games with a .910 save percentage and a 2.02 goals against average. However, he played just nine games all season long.
Three players the Oilers signed toward the end of the season will be attending the camp. Quinn Huston signed in April out of the NCAA and played two games with the Oilers. Damien Carfagna also signed with the Oilers out of the NCAA. German forward Josh Samaski performed well in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga and signed with the Oilers in April.
Beau Akey was their top pick in the 2023 draft. After missing most of the 2023-24 season with the Barrie Colts due to a shoulder injury, he scored six goals and 32 points in 52 games with the Ontario Hockey League’s Barrie Colts.
The most intriguing goalie of the bunch is 2022 fifth-rounder Samuel Jonsson. In the second tier of Sweden, the 6’3” netminder had a .922 save percentage and 1.88 goals against average in 24 games played.
The Oilers have two camp invites among the 27 players: forward Rhett Pitlick, who signed a contract with the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors last week, and 19-year-old goaltender Josh Banini, an Edmonton native, who spent last season with the WHL’s Moose Jaw Warriors.
