The Edmonton Oilers continue to piece together their roster for the 2026-27 season, specifically on the back end, as the team announced on Sunday that it has signed defenseman Spencer Stastney to a one-year contract extension.

Stastney, a 26-year-old left-handed shot, will make $1.525 million and will be eligible to test unrestricted free agency next summer. Stastney was a restricted free agent prior to signing this new deal.

The Oilers acquired Stastney in a mid-season trade with the Nashville Predators in December. Prior to the move Stastney had spent his entire NHL career in the Music City after making his debut during the 2022-23 campaign.

This past season was the first in which Stastney handled anything approaching a full-time NHL role, as his 66 regular season appearances shattered his prior career high of 23. The Woodbridge, Illinois native recorded 10 points in his 66 games after scoring a pair of goals and handing out eight assists.

In three Stanley Cup Playoff appearances with Edmonton, Stastney was held pointless while skating to a plus-1 rating on an average of 10:59 of time on ice per game as the Oilers were knocked out of the first round in a six-game series against the Anaheim Ducks.

With Stastney on the ice during 5-on-5 play in the regular season, Edmonton controlled 46.93% of the expected goals and 45.7% of the high-danger scoring chances.

It has been a busy offseason for Oilers general manager Stan Bowman and his front office, as the club hired Mike Babcock following an NHL investigation as the new head coach.

Bowman has re-shaped his defense on the fly this summer, trading Darnell Nurse to the San Jose Sharks for a return including depth blueliner Shakir Mukhamadullin and signing former Pittsburgh Penguins stay-at-home defender Ryan Shea to a four-year contract with a salary cap hit of $4 million.
