The Edmonton Oilers lost another forward to injury last night against the Detroit Red Wings. Partway through the second period, winger Zach Hyman exited prematurely after being hit by Red Wings defenseman Andreas Englund.
Later in the evening, Jason Gregor of the Jason Gregor Show said Hyman is expected to miss at least a week with a concussion. Still, the Oilers haven’t specified Hyman’s injury or his potential recovery timeline.
The hit didn’t appear very malicious (video link). The two players met at the blue line, and Englund pushed Hyman into the boards. Still, Hyman hit his head the wrong way on the plexiglass, immediately beginning to grab the back of his head and falling to the ice. Hyman has suffered multiple upper-body injuries throughout his career, but this would be his first documented concussion.
Even if he only misses a week, it’s another troubling blow to the Oilers and Hyman. The 12-year veteran recently returned from an upper-body injury and had scored one goal in his first six games of the 2026-27 campaign. Edmonton should get some short-term relief in his absence, as Jason Dickinson is expected to return from a lower-body injury tomorrow.
Still, the Oilers can’t catch their breath. On offense, once Dickinson returns, Hyman will join Mattias Janmark and Matthew Savoie in the press box. Edmonton is also without defensemen Mattias Ekholm and Alec Regula, and netminders Frederik Andersen and Devon Levi.
From the outside, you wouldn’t know how short-handed they are. Despite the injuries, the Oilers are off to an 8-2-2 start thanks to torrid starts from Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Evan Bouchard. The trio has scored 27 goals and 79 points in 36 combined games and, objectively, are why Edmonton sits atop the Western Conference through the early stages of the 2026-27 season.
