When the Edmonton Oilers open the new NHL season at home against the Calgary Flames on Oct. 8, they could be missing a key piece to the roster. Star forward Zach Hyman underwent surgery during the postseason to repair a wrist injury, and his status remains uncertain for the opener.

Zach Hyman Could Miss Oilers Opener

Hyman revealed some more information on his injury recovery, saying that he wasn't sure about his availability. The star did reveal that he is recovering nicely, but that it could take longer than expected.

"Have one more meeting with the surgeon to wrap it up, which is great," Hyman told NHL.com at Hockey Canada's 2025 National Teams Orientation Camp on Thursday. "Will I be ready for the start of the season? I don't know. But I'm on the right track, which is good. The fact that I don't know is a good thing because it could be, ‘No, I'm not.’"

Hyman had surgery at the end of May after suffering an injury against the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference Final. The veteran collided with Stars forward Mason Marchment, and it ended his season.

The veteran had to watch his team lose in the Stanley Cup Final again, and all it has done is motivate him to get back on the ice. Losing Hyman did impact the Oilers' playoff performance heavily, as he was a crucial piece to the success they saw.

In 15 games that he played, Hyman put up five goals and six assists for Edmonton. Hyman had 27 goals and 17 assists in 73 regular-season games for the Oilers.

The hope is that Hyman will be able to get back on the ice when the year opens, but if not, then shortly after. The Oilers need him to be available, and he could be the missing ingredient to help get this team finally over the top.
