On February 23, 2021, Patrick Kane scored four points as the Blackhawks defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 6-5 in a shootout.
This back-and-forth affair featured goals aplenty. Carl Soderberg and Kane got the Blackhawks out to a two-goal lead before Cam Atkinson and Patrik Laine responded for Columbus. Brandon Hagel, Dominik Kubalik, and Adam Boqvist also scored for Chicago, but Laine's second goal and a pair of tallies by Oliver Bjorkstrand sent the game to overtime.
Alex DeBrincat was the only player for either team to score in the shootout, giving the Blackhawks a road victory.
Nick Schmaltz , a Blackhawks' first-round pick in the 2014 NHL Draft, was born on February 23, 1996. Schmaltz spent parts of three seasons in Chicago and scored 91 points (29 goals, 62 assists) in 162 regular-season games. He appeared in four playoff games with the Blackhawks but didn't register a point. On November 25, 2018, the Blackhawks traded Schmaltz to the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for Dylan Strome and Brendan Perlini.
